Comfort + Luxury. they seem to be one in the same. when you're comfortable, there's no doubt, no worry, no irritation, no rush. when you're comfortable, you're enveloped by a sense of security, a sense of pleasure, and a responsible disregard for obligation. when you're comfortable, you're at peace, at rest. all is right.

we can all create our own comfortable luxury. Comfort and Luxury are both very personable, very different meanings for each individual. no one can tell you exactly the recipe for your own version. here are a few suggestions:

-- lighting. artificial lighting is often harsh, discoloured, and ruins the mood for sure. rather than switching on the overhead florescents, opt to open your curtains. without a shadow of a doubt, natural light is best. in the evening, strategically position lit candles. the soft light not only adds a dash of romance and charm, but the warmth sprinkles a depth to the atmosphere. and the shadows provide brilliant texture, transforming a flat wall to a three-dimensional art installation.

-- temperature. this sounds silly, but "comfort" for you may be different than "comfort" for your guests. the ultimate comfortable luxury is the perfect climate. neither too hot, too cold, too humid, too dry.

-- fragrance. subtle, soft aromas are best. if you're comfortable luxury environment is for a meal, you'll want to refrain from using strongly scented flowers, candles, or home fragrances. instead, let the food be your fragrance. if you're comfortable luxury environment is not food-centric, natural fragrances are best. i particularly love the aromas of fresh flowers like orange blossoms, balsam, and verbena. if trying to induce rest and/or sleep, lavender is always a winner.

respect + reason

I've worked in retail for many years. One thing that will never cease to amaze me is when customers have unrealistic expectations, and a reckless disregard of respect and reason.

Case en point - nothing lasts forever. It is unrealistic to expect that, say, a knife you purchase, will survive irresponsible, incorrect sharpening techniques. It is illogical to believe you can wear handmade lambskin loafers everyday for 3 years without proper conditioning, polishing, and (possible) reconstruction. If you buy a jar of garlic aoli, with a shelf life of three months, that you failed to open until seven months after purchase, the fault lies only with one entity.

There are many issues to consider:

-- money = power. As consumers, we choose where we do business. If we like a brand, a concept, or a product, we make that known by supporting the things we're keen on with recommendations to friends and family, and we support them financially as well. If we're dissatisfied, the inverse action occurs. However, policies are policies. If a store's return policy clearly states that you may exchange or return products within a certain time frame, arguing with the salesperson, who has no part in creating said policies, will get you nowhere. Often times, manufacturers have their own extended warranty, their own technical support channels. Manufacturers directly have much more product knowledge, can brand specific tips and tricks, and may offer replacement parts, or repair, or reissue of merchandise entirely.

-- policies are for a reason. If you're at a private label retailer (a store that sells only one brand of products - like Ikea) return policies are generally set in stone and not negotiable. However, when you're at department stores, or stores who stock more than one brand, the return policies may include a blanket policy on all products and services for a limited time, and then extended warranties and insurances may be picked up directly through the manufacturer. In fact, some brands prefer that you deal directly with their corporate return departments, rather than the retailers. Again, customers are often brought to solutions quicker, receive additional information and education regarding the use of the product and prevention of misuse. Nespresso, my favourite coffee machine, is one of these. With the purchase of every machine, Nespresso has a little "love note" on the inside of every package, encouraging customers to register their product online, and encourages customers to deal directly with the brand, rather than third-party vendors. They know their product best. They know their product's functions, limitations, and design. Their customer service is flawless, every time.

-- policies eliminate confusion and streamline the process. From a management/owner standpoint, having one return policy, and being firm on that policy, eliminates confusion when training associates. When a customer has a return or exchange, the customer can receive fabulous customer service and conduct the transaction with any available associate, rather than waiting for a manager or the designated customer service analyst to become available. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule, which generally can be made only by management. But policies are policies. Enforcing them keeps prices low for customers, profits high for investors.

-- a double edged sword. Recently I was in a store, where a customer was trying to exchange a product they had damaged. First, I must say - I was shocked that a customer damaged a product and thought it was the responsibility of the store to replace the product that was originally free of defect. But to top it off, the customer knowingly admitted that the receipt was outside of the normal return policy, and threatened the employee that if the product wasn't exchanged, a nasty customer service complaint would be filed. The employee placated the customer, exchanged the product, and visibly upset, went on to help other customers. This would have been fine - except placating the customer had unintended consequences. Another customer, who appeared to be a regular client, watched this transaction from afar, and expressed their disappointment with the company policies. "If you let anyone return products - especially damaged items, it cheapens the brand and ultimately makes prices go up."

Pacifying one customer, who probably doesn't frequent the establishment very often, negatively impacts those clients who repeatedly shop.

And for small businesses, there is often greater cost to returning damaged goods. Some stores charge restocking or repackaging fees. For specially ordered items, only a portion of the original purchase price may be refunded. When I worked for Christian Dior, if a client was special ordering an item, 50% of the total merchandise was required before the products would be delivered to the store. And this was NONREFUNDABLE! If the client choose not to take the items, they were more than welcome to decide so, less the deposit. The deposit covered all expenses associated with the expedited shipping, packaging, and delivery of said goods. Many items were considered final sales: they were unable to be exchanged or returned.

Products are shipped from the manufacturing site, to a central warehouse, to a distribution center, to a shop, where it's sold to customers. When these products are exchanged or returned, they're collected at each shop, repackaged, reprocessed, returned to a distribution center, where they are then sorted and either destroyed, sold at a discount, or returned to the original vendor. All of this shipping, returning, repackaging, reprocessing costs money. Whether a store charges fees for restocking, or builds these services in to the original pricing, customers end up picking up the final tab.

Buyer be ware. If you're buying something of significant value, do your homework. Check stores' return policies and manufacturer warranties. Many credit cards include separate extended coverage, like American Express. And if you do buy something that must be returned or exchanged, remember that it's not the policies of the employee. "Don't shoot the messenger!" Showing respect, exercising reason, and employing polite manners will get you much further than unrealistic demands, disrespect, and undue attitude.

-- furniture with electrical outlets built in - like the couches, benches, and tables at Starbucks. you can never have enough electrical outlets it seems, and it definitely eliminates potential trip hazards, unsightly power cords, and is such a convenience.

-- I'm loving the Hermes and Tom Ford fragrances for men. Scent-sational.

upgrade, downsize, forward thinking, backward reflecting

I love motion. Our lives our in motion. And I just realized, one of my (former) favourite brands called Martin + Osa had a mantra of "lives in motion". And it's true. We're constantly moving - both physically and mentally. We go places. We grow. We travel. We get stronger. We go longer.

Speaking of motion, this year is about improvement. Life is about improvement. My challenge to you: upgrade the things you have, the places you go, and your choices. It's simple. When you make positive changes to your every day; when you go out of your way, even if just a tiny bit, you make a difference. One less potato chip. One more minute of exercise. One more week without Starbucks to buy the better shoes that may be just a tad-bit-more expensive. One less meal out. One more moment spent reflecting on the day. You'll surprise yourself.

Whilst upgrading, simultaneously downsize. Comedian George Carlin once had an entire sketch devoted to people and their stuff. The main point: people get bigger houses to hold the stuff they don't need. Do you really need 10,000 tshirts? Will you ever use that empty tin that your Great Aunt Helena mailed to you 2 Christmases ago? Minimize the amount of stuff; maximize the quality.

I'm not saying you should neglect the moment you're in, but it's important to be forward thinking. Is there action you can do now that will make your life more efficient, more enjoyable, more profitable, or more meaningful? A little preplanning can save you time, and that's more valuable than money for sure.

Spend a quiet moment each day. My roommates in college used to laugh, but I used to ask the same questions when I saw them. "What was the best part of your day? What could have been better? And what could have been worse?" Who and what are important should be on the forefront of your mind. If not, make an effort to include the important ones tomorrow.

A few things I'm loving, in no particular order of course:

-- Lytro Camera. Lytro lets you take pictures like never before. Unlike a conventional camera that captures a single plane of light, the Lytro camera captures the entire light field, which is all the light traveling in every direction in every point in space. Say goodbye to pictures as you know it - you pick what you want to focus on, and can refocus on whatever you want, whenever you want. It's like capturing still-live in motion. The possibilities are endless.

-- I love technology. And I'm super nostalgic. So when you combine vintage-inspired, sustainably harvested beechwood, the convenience to charge my iPhone, and the function of an oldschool alarm clock, it's a win win win for all, and a definite must-have! -- comfort + convenience + conservation = the learning thermostat from nest. so. cool. or hot, if you prefer.

-- love for travel + love for food = love for cooking food from other places. But how many ounces is a gram? And how hot should the oven be? With this most brilliant dish cloth from Crate & Barrel, all of your conversions are at hand. Or at least at the sink.
-- I love Gucci. I love quality accessories. I love this colour blue. So what could be better? Imagine with great denim, a comfy tshirt, and these shoes. Or khaki chinos, a khaki knit sweater, and this perfect pop of colour.

part of me hope you're all resolving to live more fashionable, more meaningful, and more glamourous lives. but part of me hope you're already living the most fashionable, most meaningful, and most glamourous life as you can.

it's nice to have something to hope for, a time in our lives that reminds us to get back to basics, fine tuning your focus onto what and who is important. but at the same time, shouldn't we all inherently want to de-clutter our lives and concentrate our existence, maximizing meaning and minimizing expenditure of resources?

i've got a myriad of thoughts streaming through my mind. there's so much i want to say. and nothing at all.

it's cold outside, so i'm happy to wear some of my favourite warm weather gear. right now, i'm loving my double-faced wool peacoat from Ralph Lauren's Rugby it's got military style buttons, is very streamlined, a little extra tailoring than normal, and comes right to the bottom of my hips. perfect length for "not so cold" cold weather. easy to get in and out of the car with. and has the warmest, softest pockets. the little details are fabulous too - visible darting, tone-on-tone top stitching, backer buttons, and silk lining. loads of interior, hidden pockets. and a reinforced loop to hang on coat hooks and such.

i love cooking. for myself, for my friends and family, for other people. my family has always loved cooking and entertaining, but it took on an entirely new meaning when my Mom died. cooking = memories. cooking = a gift. cooking = sustenance for the body, nourishment for the soul.

i love traveling. new food, new fashion, new friends, new finds, new cultures and experiences.

as much as i love being around people, i also like eating by myself. at the bar of fabulous restaurants. you get better service. and the people watching is much better than in the restaurant. and if you're lucky, order what the bar tender orders or recommends, and the kitchen staff will go out of their way to prepare in the most perfect way your food. because when you eat the bar tender's recommendation at the tender's bar, it's not just the reputation of the restaurant, but the reputation of the bar tender as well, that's on the line. and everyone benefits.

i love when people pay attention to the simple details done well. the perfect crema on espresso. taking the time to arrange a proper bouquet of flowers. holding the door for others. wrapping a present with the most beautiful papers, ribbons, and decor. remembering people's preferences. in essence, surrounding yourself with beauty, thought, class, and comfort.

i can't wait for my new iPhone to arrive. i've had the same iPhone for nearly 5 years, and it's time to upgrade. part of me is a little disappointed - i've kept the device in mint condition - but all of the software updates and such are a little too complex for the now out-of-date hardware. but the other part of me is overjoyed. you see, my trusty iPhone has lasted much longer than most mobilephones on the market today, so i'm thankful. and hope i get as much use, enjoyment, and entertainment from the new one as i have from my current device.

i'm kind of obsessed with food halls. you know, grocers and grocery departments of upscale stores. like Harvey Nichols. Harrods. Williams-Sonoma. Fortnum & Mason. Dean & DeLuca. David Jones.

i love beautiful things with function. like fabulous cookware. or incredible shoes/outerware. or a beautiful tote bag. everyday elegance and comfortable luxury.

that's my goal for this year. to maximize my everyday elegance and comfortable luxury, and help you learn how to incorporate this into your every day.

Maybe because I've read GQ for more than half my life, but part of me gets super excited when the fashion bible likes brands I'm really loving as well. Like this month's pick of Woolrich Woolen Mills. I might possibly have been living in my navy blue, light weight trousers for the past year. With luxe fabrics, casual design, and impeccable tailoring and construction, their creations are perfect for paring with tshirts as they are for dress shirts and ties.

I can't get enough of Moods of Norway. I visited their store in Los Angeles and couldn't get enough. Imagine Ted Baker + Scandinavia + humour + quality + incredible wit = Moods of Norway! They had a giant golden tractor in the store - so fun and random. I love it. Here's their philosophy:

ABCs of a sizzling summer, part deux

Oscar de la Renta: (happy birthday, by the way!). He knows hot to flatter the feminine physique like no other. For glamourous gowns and dynamite dresses, Oscar is the industry go-to-guy. And as if that weren't enough, I might possibly be in love with Oscar's tweeting pal, who chronicles his every move with style and class.

Periodicals - maybe I'm just nostalgic for the days when you went to the library and pulled the card catalog for find an armful of books to check out for your summer reading. But there's something so very fulfilling about reading an actual book or magazine. Don't get me wrong - I love the virtual features brought to you only on the iPad, like videos, sound, etc. But I love a relaxing day at the pool, beach, or coffee shop with a magazine or book or two.

quality: it sounds like a given, but let "quality" be your mantra for the summer. eat quality food. drink quality drinks. spend quality time with quality friends. stay at a hotel with quality. travel with quality. sleep with quality. live with quality. quality quality quality.

(public) radio (international): I can't get enough. Maybe because I grew up listening to National Public Radio and Public Radio International. Maybe because they're programing is entertaining, informative, and meaningful. Maybe because I studied broadcast journalism in university. Maybe because it just might possibly be one of the coolest applications for the iPhone/iPad.

Sun (protection): Cancer is never en vogue. My Mother had skin cancer, which turned into brain cancer, lung cancer, and eventually killed her. Something like 80% of your skin damage is done by the time you're 18. As Marc Jacobs says, "protect the skin you're in" and slather up the sun screen. Wear a hat. And big, giant sun glasses with super dark lenses. They'll protect the delicate skin around your eyes, are definitely fashionable, and prevent people from seeing you stare.

Travel. At every opportunity, you must travel. Maybe there's a new restaurant or park on the other side of your city that you've not yet been to. Maybe there's an art exhibition in your country/Provence/state's biggest city that you've been putting off visiting. Or, if time/resources allow, maybe it's time to take a trip to the other side of the globe and discover a new land, a new people, a new way of life, and a new fashion. My point: get out! Discover. Explore. Shop!

And speaking of travel, I'd be doing a disservice if I didn't tell you about the most exciting and incredible travel opportunity for my American friends: Abercrombie & Kent, the luxury travel leaders, have the first opportunity for ordinary Americans to visit CUBA! Must. Go. Now!

Unique fabrics: I'm really loving fabrics that are special. Fun, flirty, floral prints - like from Liberty of London. Or iconic, insatiable, irresistible fabrics from Marimekko. The fashion high of Missoni's undeniably rich textiles. The luxe, heritage weaves of Ralph Lauren Home. I love the incredible texture, design, and aesthetic of quality, unique fabric.

Very Valentino - I'm not a purveyor of parfume. I don't get paid millions of euro each year to formulate special blends. I keep my fragrances in cool, dark places because I read in GQ several years ago that it extends the life of your fragrances. And when I graduated high school, my awesome friend Janet bought me Very Valentino. It smelled really fabulous, and was obviously a nighttime scent, with smoky, woodsy notes. I've heard that fragrances go rancid over time. But it must be more than 10 years, because I recently found my bottle of Very Valentino, that I received 10 years ago, and it smells as deliciously intoxicating today as it did the very first time I sprayed the cologne. I don't think it's currently in production, so I'll use it sparingly for sure.

White - whether you're in summer or winter right now, it's all about white. White linen in the north, white wool/fur in the south. White is so clean, so classic, so crisp, and so perfect for every occasion.

ABCs of a sizzling summer

Summer is here (in the northern hemisphere, at least) and I couldn't be happier. Don't get me wrong - I love winter clothes, especially outerwear and accessories. But I'm so excited for shorts, linen, trips to the beach that don't require blankets and coats, and fun in the sun! So dust off your favourite sandals, shake your relaxation inducing liquid refreshment, and get outside!

Here are some things I'm loving, in no particular order, of course!

Axe buzzed look cream - I've not tried this yet myself, but I absolutely love the concept. Haircare + sun protection = a match made in summer's heaven.

Bvlgari Aqva pour Homme Marine toniq - everything I love all in one: freshness of water, clean crispness of citrus, and spicy masculinity of sandalwood.

CB2 - I can't get enough of the younger, hipper brother to furniture giant Crate & Barrel. CB2 brings modernity, utility, and a touch of humour and whimsy to your spaces with purpose and pizzazz.

Denim, especially WHITE denim from Dior. I know white denim is so cyclical, but Dior Homme has mastered their craft for sure. They've incorporated Japanese denim with a slight stretch for comfort and have a lower rise, so they sit casually on the hip. They fit like your favourite pair of jeans from the moment you own them, and incredibly get better with time.

Etiqueta Negra - imagine Ralph Lauren's Argentinian, polo playing cousin. Now splash in a bit more European sensibility, pull out some of the English dandy, and hand him a delicious Mexican cerveza - and you've got Etiqueta Negra. Summer done simply with EN for sure.

Fiat's 500 - finally available stateside. It was almost Euro-overload for me when the cinquecento AND Magnum's classic ice cream bars became available within a short time of each other. I love this little car. Smart, economical, stylish, and room enough for you, your date, and luggage for the weekend jaunt.

Goyard luggage - opulent, incredibly luxurious, long-lasting, well-made, and the perfect travel accessory. As much as I love Louis Vuitton, Goyard makes the best statement whilst away.

Hermes - the luxe French fashion house is always en pointe. Summer wouldn't be complete for me without their intoxicating eau de pamplemousse rose. It's incredible.

iEverything - I know it's just stuff - but my life wouldn't be as organised, I wouldn't be as entertained, and I wouldn't be as connected if it weren't for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod. I can't get enough. I'm especially loving the PRI app.

Last name: Jacobs. First name: Marc. If I could only be obsessed with one fashion brand, I think it'd be with MJ. He's been the pulse of all things kickass since the 80s. I don't know how his creative genius continues to keep evolving in a better-than-expected manner, but each season I seem to love his designs more and more. He took Louis Vuitton from your grandmother's preferred luggage maker to the red-hot luxe brand it is today. (too bad he can't do the same for Dior...)

Kiehl's Cross-Terain UV face protector SPF 50. Broad-spectrum skincare that protects against UVA and UVB damage - Kiehl's knows skincare like Galliano knows how to be offensive. Skin cancer is never en vogue, so protect yourself (in more ways than one!).

Loomstate - Launched in New York City in 2004 by designer Rogan Gregory and Scott Mackinlay Hahn, Loomstate was founded as a casual brand dedicated to creating demand for certified organic cotton using socially and environmentally responsible methods of production. Now they've expanded beyond clothes to accessories, home goods, and specialty collections. Their board shorts and tshirts are summer staples.

Maison Martin Margiela - Like my love affair with Marc Jacobs, I also love Martin Margiela. Understated elegance. The best materials, cut in the best designs, for the perfect aesthetic. Light, airy shirts. Comfortable, durable trousers. Awesome accessories. Expensive, and worth every cent. Check out Margiela's new eBoutique. It's virtual heaven.

Neroli Portofino, the fragrance by Tom Ford. Citruses, with the quiet elegance of orange blossom. It smells like the summer sun in Sorrento.

I've noticed a huge trend in the US lately, and I must admit: I am in love with the fact that an influx of international fashion has exploded here. Some of my favourite retailers from around the world are opening up shop stateside. Here are some that I can't get enough of:

-- Etiqueta Negra from Argentina. Imagine if Ralph Lauren, Tom Ford, and the creative people behind American Eagle's Martin + Osa all made a South American love child! Rugged. Masculine. Refined. Modern. I cannot get enough. Currently only two stateside stores: Miami and New York City. Shout out to David in Aventura (Miami) if you need assistance. He is very friendly, knowledgeable, and professional.

-- Allsaints Spitalfields from London. One of the coolest throwback stores. I'd say if you took John Varvatos and made him shack up in the UK on a tour bus with the coolest independent rock band ever, the place they'd shop and hang out would be Allsaints. Quality, style, character, and creativity are the name of the game. And music is more than the soundtrack. Fashion rocks at Allsaints. Currently about 15 retail locations nationwide.

As thought and seen from the comfort of the Starbucks leather armchair:

Today is Cinco de Mayo, the day when Americans pretend to care about and live Mexico, when really it's just another excuse to party and drink one too many shots of tequila. Regardless of the reason, I love festive moods. And it's my brother's birthday! So we're having our share if birthday shots and pretend the mariachi band is just a birthday band coincidence.

A couple just came in. Think cowboys from the ranch. With matching wrangler jeans, he in a plaid shirt, her in a halter top. My favorite part? She had a fake Valentino handbag. Incredible.

Then a guy comes in wearing flip flops, board shorts, and an overly baggy golf shirt. We're not near the beach. Or the pool. Surf stuff belongs on the sands. And golf gear belongs on the links. Not together. And definitely not at inland Starbucks.

Then there's the eastern European man, about mid-30s, with his laptop, iPad, iPod, and iPhone. He needs to get an iLife. I, too, like well-fitting designer jeans. But the so-skinny-we-can-see-that-you're-not-Jewish variety is unacceptable. And for the love of Jesus y Maria, sunglasses are for when it's sunny - not indoors in coffee shops.

Ooh - actually someone with fabulous style arrived. She's got on these sexy python printed gray pumps, with a gray, black, and bright yellow houndstooth skirt, skinny patent leather bright yellow belt, and a very light gray silky looking tanktop. If she didn't scoot in and out so quickly, I would have gone all Scott Schuman and taken a fabulous picture of her and posted here for your enjoyment.

Seeing her bright belt made me remember the spread in thus month's US version of GQ - it's all about men's belts. I couldn't agree more - complimenting, yet contrasting belts in brilliant colours are the perfect way to add some pizzazz and panache to your look. I have a bright orange canvas belt with off-white trim that I'm loving with khaki suits or white pants. And there's another orange Hermes belt I just can't get enough of.

I feel like there's a sudden invasion of designer watches again. I know fashion is cyclical. And we saw big emphasis on watches a few years back. But even mid- markets are seeing luxury watch stores. Like Jacksonville, FL and Nashville, TN and Indianapolis, IN are suddenly home to luxury watch stores. Omega used to be the top tier for the Swatch Watch kingdom - but with so many access points popping up, the luxe factor is diminishing. Sure, the watches are incredibly well done, but one of the biggest parts of luxury is exclusivity. When Dior opened outlet stores, loyal customers felt the brand was cheapened and too accessible. (thankfully, the outlet in tourism centric Orlando, FL has closed shop!)

I love summertime. Especially when girls are running outside more often, getting fit, tan, and healthy. One girl just walked in here to Starbucks who I recognize from my frequent neighborhood runs. Her khaki skirt, casually rumpled chambray shirt, and flirty, fun flats were perfect compliments to her sunkissed skin and beautiful blonde locks.

Well, it's 4 o'clock and it's time to meet my brother and his wife. We'll be at the cantina for tequila and guacamole, but not to pretend we supported Mexico in their battle against France so many years ago. Today we celebrate his birth, and the fact that we're fortunate enough to be together and drink in the middle of the day.

fabulous finds

in no particular order, here are some people and things that I cannot simply get enough of:

Glamourous, gorgeous gray of all hues and all sort. In my bumble opinion, gray is the most versatile colour, from casual t's to formal tuxedos and gowns, to paint and jewelry, gray is always en vogue. It's the perfect canvas for every occasion.

I love denim that's not overly worked. Leave those super whiskered, beyond destroyed, hanging-by-a-thread jeans for yardwork and camping.

Dior Homme jeans - classic fabrics, modern silhouettes, streamline, not-so-tight-we-can-tell-your-religion, not-so-baggy that you lose shape, these jeans are casual, comfortable, and certifiably cool.

The Fiat 500 is finally available in the US, and I think I must. have. now! And speaking of things available for the first time in the US, MAGNUM ICE CREAM BARS are here, too! Happiness. Pure happiness.

Two kitchen ranges you should know, own, and use frequently: Staub and Shun. Staub, makers of enamel coated cast iron cookery from France, and Shun, makers of my favourite Edo collection of knives, are masters of their craft. Classic, time-tested kitchen traditions with modern, marvelous flair. Well done doesn't begin to describe the technique and end result. Cooking and chopping has never been the same.

Kate Middleton, or Princess Catherine as she's now known, in her incredible Sarah Burton dress for Alexander McQueen. The neckline. The silhouette. The modernity to the top, with the classic inspiration for the bottom, that quietly elegant lace, the flawless makeup, the vintage Cartier tiara. I could go on and on. (And dear, God, I think I might be in love with her sister Pippa!)

Elegant gentlemen seem to have a well traveled, obvious spirit of adventure, a little playfulness, a dash of formality without being stuffy, and an obvious masculinity without being forced or fussed.

I'm still, as always, loving Belstaff jackets, travel cases by Goyard, Hermes, and Tom Ford, and beautiful pops of colour like Marc Jacobs, Jil Sander, and Michael Bastian.

And speaking of colour, I'm loving ink and paint splattered fabrics. Especially with denim or anything Dries Van Noten. Just keep your splattering to a minimum.

I love the texture we're seeing in Louis Vuitton, Diesel Black Gold, Lanvin, and Bottega Veneta.

I love classic accessories with a purpose - like the writing notebooks from Smythson, good cedar shoe trees, or a heritage collection catchall tray for your cufflinks and daily accoutrements.

I read a recipe in the GQ Style magazine from the UK and I'm absolutely loving this cocktail called "Before breakfast martini" - 50 mL gin, 20 mL cointreau, 20 mL lemon juice, 2-3 thin slices fresh Ginger, 1.5 tsp orange marmalade, splash cranberry. Muddle, shake, pour.

sorry for my brief hiatus from posting - this is the fourth anniversary of my Mother's death, so I've been focused on other items of importance, as you can imagine.

Today I woke up early, went to the cemetery, daily mass, and had breakfast at one of Her favourite places. Whilst there, I was flipping through a few magazines, and here's what I'm really loving now:

Glam in green - especially celery, grass, sage, olive, and lime.

Worn and woven bracelets - nylon and cotton sailor versions or effort leather wraps.

Fresh flowers - just because. Hands down, B.Brooks still has the best flowers.

Seersucker blazers with jeans and Tshirts.

Vintage inspired luggage - especially from Filson, Globe Trotter, and Goyard.

Ivy league prep + Naval utilitarianism and classicism.

Gant, and everything else Michael Bastian dreams up. It's like Montauk + Edgartown + St Barths all wrapped in one preppy package and tied with sailing line.

Gingham - of all shapes and sizes.

trends and tricks of the season that I can't get enough of, in no particular order, of course.

Destroyed white denim. Think slim, not skinny. The general public should walk past a gentleman wearing white skinny jeans and be able to tell what religion he is. I'm loving leather cuff watches. Almost like an edgy wrap bracelet, this is the perfect way to add rugged masculinity in a functional manner to any wardrobe. Especially love the Burberry Prorsum leather cuff watch.

Dolce & Gabbana's woven sandals for both men and women. Not the gladiator, chunky style, but elegant, minimally profiled versions.

I'm loving patterns and prints - especially florals, geometrical designs, and mixed textures. Until we're actually in spring, this look can be achieved by selecting winter colors in spring fabrics, or spring colors in season appropriate fabrics, depending on your climate. Remember, mixing patterns is easy - just pair one larger scaled design with a smaller scaled design. For example, Burberry's megacheck plaid printed blouse is incredible with a pin dot speckled scarf. For makeup - keep it fresh. Minimal makeup for maximum statement and allure. I'm loving supple, dewy skin with a naturally enhanced eye and lively, luscious lip. And as summer approaches, a sunny disposition goes a long way - so get acquainted with your favorite bronzer.

I'm so sick of John Galliano - but my love for the House of Dior will never end, no matter how disrespectful or despicable Galliano may be. China is emerging as the new Luxury Leader. More and more Chinese and snatching up luxury brands than ever before. So where better for Dior to put on a show than Shanghai? The bathroom is a sanctuary. After all, the place where you spend some of your most personal daily moments should at least be aesthetically pleasing, functional, and relaxing. Here are some new products that I'm loving for the bathroom.

Egg and bean shapes have been in fashion forever. Elsa Peretti's bean collection has been one of the highest grossing, most recognizable collections for Tiffany & Co. since debut. Now Kohler offers an egg/bean shaped bathtub. This is the shape of things to come. The Lithocast line of freestanding baths introduces a premium solid-surface material that allows for new geometries, textures and designs for the modern bath. Lithocast offers the beauty of real stone yet is warm and comfortable against the body. And it's easy to clean.

Some of my favourite qualities in luxury are functionality, quality design and application, and intermixing materials and colours. For example, I love Dior Homme's Chiffre Rouge watches for men - incredible Swiss movement, the finest materials, and fabulous appearance. The strong black accents the stainless steel and red impeccably. Naturally, I love Kohler's Karbon Lavatory Sinks.

With two pivoting joints, the Karbon articulating bathroom lavatory faucet lets you put water exactly where you want it as you shave, wash your hands or rinse the basin. The multifunction sprayhead can save up to 14,700 gallons of water each year compared to faucets with standard aerators. It sounds silly saying you "love" a sink, but the design, the function, and pure beauty of this sink really are spot on.

I've never heard of the bathroom and fixture supplier called Kallista before, but I can't seem to get enough of this bathroom design:

I love the mixed textures and colours - the browns, the polished metals, the crisp white towels, toilet, and natural stone sink vessel. The surfaces smooth, rough, sleek, natural, and man-made. The Axor Starck shower and bathroom scape is absolutely unreal. Words can't describe how amazing this looks. Simple. Irresistible. So well done. Philippe Starck is one of my favourite designers anyway, so I'm not surprised I love this bathroom as well. Who knew the lavatory could be so pretty?!

Did you know that dry hands can spread up to 1,000 times less bacteria than wet ones? I don't know if this is available for residential purchase and installation, or only for professional/industrial use, but the Dyson Airblade hand dryer is a true work of art. Filtering the air so there's less bacteria, reducing the carbon footprint by thousands, dries hands in just 12 seconds (or less), and so much fun to use - I can't say enough good things about this device. I know it's expensive to redo the bathroom. But doing so can save you loads of money. Investing in quality fixtures and serene spaces improves your health, too! When you look good, you feel better. And that will always be en vogue.

the not so hi-lo Presidential fashion

I love talking about style and fashion. I like discovering and analyzing how fashion plays a part of our every day, how the power of fashion and trends can influence a decision, a perspective, a point of view (and to view a point).

Today a buddy asked what I thought about First Lady Michelle Obama. For those who don't know, our First Lady was recently interviewed on the nationally televised morning chat programme The Today Show. Mrs. Obama wore a US$35 dress from Swedish H&M paired with a fabulous orange belt and bright yellow pumps.

My thoughts? Firstly, Mrs. O looked fabulous. I'm such a fan of rocking the hi-lo - pairing expensive luxury with everyday, casual wear. And the vivid pops of colour accentuated her physique brilliantly.

On the other hand, I got to thinking. Our First Lady, no matter what the agenda or task at hand, represents America. She represents our ideals, is a beacon of hope and inspiration, and is the perfect PR commercial for the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

Mrs. O could have very easily featured one of many incredible American designers. The iconic Diane von Furstenberg. Calvin Klein. Marc Jacobs. Michael Bastian. Ralph Lauren. The list goes on. But she purposely picked a mass-produced, albeit stylish, garment from a Swedish department store found in every majour city. It wasn't special.

Our First Lady is anything but ordinary. In her private life, she can rock whatever threads she desires. This is a free country, after all. But when she's in a public arena, especially on national television, I expect the best. Both stylistically and politically. Leave the mass-produced, discounted knockoffs for Mr. Mubarak.

I don't know why, but I've been glued to the latest news regarding the protests and uprising in Tunisia, Egypt, and on smaller scales in Yemen, Jordan, and Algeria. I can't imagine how the young people must feel, having worked so hard to attend and graduate college, only to find a jobless reality and incredibly corrupt governments with exorbitantly priced daily necessities. Frustrating to say the least.

It's understandable for those of us out of the region to feel helpless. But our pennies are powerful. Here are some fabulous finds. Let our pocketbooks send a message - we support those who want to support themselves through education, hard work, and peace.

Azza Fahmy - Known to be the leading jewelery designer in the Arab World, Ms. Fahmy has more than 40 years experience leading her company with the most amazing Egyptian design influence. Her pieces can be found from London to Cairo and are simply stunning.

Williams-Sonoma - The purveyor of all things cooking, the kitchen giant currently features a Tunisian tagine, hand-painted by a single artist. This earthenware dish can be used for traditional North African dishes, as well as couscous and rice dishes. If you've never cooked with a tagine - the cone shape makes for incredibly moist foods. This version features food-safe paints and glazes, is made of hand-thrown clay to retain heat, is perfect for cooking and serving, and is oven and microwave safe.

As each day progresses, our global economy is becoming smaller and more dependent on the economic climate and model of others. When the price of crude oil increases in the Middle East, the price of corn in rural America increases, and the price of an apple in London increases, and the price of a train ticket in Sao Paolo increases, and the price of fish in Norway increases. We're all in this together. As China and other countries are developing into strong economic forces, I've been watching how the luxury fashion industry has responded. Observations included: Burberry creating a collection exclusively for the Japanese market called Burberry Black Label. Hermes opened an exclusively Chinese centered company called Shang Xia.

We've also seen a huge increase in corporate philanthropies. Computer pioneer Microsoft saw CEO Bill Gates leave to start his own incredibly well-funded foundation. Power players from across many segments of industries are seen with (Product) RED - from Giorgio Armani to The Gap to Motorola to Apple.

There's an Australian department store called David Jones that I've been following for a few years now.

DJ is not just Australia's oldest department store -it's the longest running department store, operating under the same name, the whole world over! Mr. Jones immigrated to Australia from Wales and opened his lavish store, with the promise of selling the best the world has to offer, with a focus on providing the everyday wants of today's shopper.

DJ has always been a future-minded business. Taking the accolade as the country's first department store, to bringing the "European Department Store" concept to the land down under, to installing Sydney's first hydraullic elevator. At the turn of the 20th century, DJ broke from the dependence on foreign imports by opening their own factory, Marlborough Street, which just hapepned to be the largest of its kind in Australia. Here, they manufactured a huge variety of goods from clothing to cabin trunks. In the 1920s, Charles Lloyd Jones moved his grandfather's company even more into the future when he purchased an entire city block in, what was preceived to be at the time, a remote area on Elizabeth Street. When you think of clothes and accessories that are designed with incredible precision, passion, attention to detail, and overloaded with luxury and style, you probably think of outrageous price tags, selfish and stuffy designers, and exclusivity so intense and out of reach that you never get a glimpse of the designer or even the design process, let alone be able to buy any of the items.

Now take a look at Marc Jacobs. He is the creative genius behind Louis Vuitton, and his own brands Marc by Marc Jacobs and Marc Jacobs collection. His designers are not only sought after, they're coveted for their brilliant designs, durability, comfort, and overall bad-ass existence. From the fabric selection to the cut to way the garment drapes, down to the threads and zippers - everything is chosen for a reason. That reason is in the name of perfection. From basic t-shirts to the most intricate handbags, Marc Jacobs knows fashion. And now, you can know Marc.

His latest philanthropic effort is a book called The Men + Women of Marc Jacobs. It features a collection of stunning photographs of employees from around the world, dressed in none other than Marc Jacobs, and also includes photographs of those behind the scenes, behind the cash registers, and behind the business desk of the powerful brand: including Marc, business guru Robert Duffy (who I lovingly refer to as RDuff) and assistant Reese. From his clothing and accessories shops, to his bookstores (playfully named bookmarc) to the next best creative outlet we don't even expect, everything Marc touches is magnetic and marvelous.

So here's a glimpse into one of the book signing parties recently from Europe.

And as if communicating directly with customers and fans through social media wasn't awesome enough (you can find them on Twitter, Facebook, and a host of other media channels. It wouldn't surprise me if we started seeing designer messenger pigeons, if that's what it takes to spread the message of style and fashion and love!). MJ and Co. are constantly updating fans on what's happening behind the brand - from fabric selection to travel plans. Recently RDuff posted a photographic of a prototype messenger bag for men and invited followers to comment; after overwhelming responses, the bag is now off the future production schedule.

When I think about other designers I love, there's a mystery and disconnect that seems to work for them. Maison Martin Margiela will always be one of my favourite designs, and he will always be the most evasive, unknown person. It's said that The Men + Women of Marc Jacobs isn't just a collection of beautiful photographs of beautiful employees of a global fashion powerhouse - to those who work with the brand - it's a family photo album.

Vintage accessories are back and bolder than ever before. Slim, but not skinny, knit ties. Vintage with a story and real character are all the rage - think of your Grandfather's cuff links or your Mother's favorite necklace. Ralph Lauren catalogue's the most storied pieces at his RRL stores. Catherine in West Hollywood's store will guide you tissues the Rolex officer's pocket watches from the 30s and 40s.

Speaking of watches, I can't get enough of the Bottega Veneta unisex BVX watch. 41mm of fabulosity and extreme luxury, everything about it screams timeless sexiness.

When the smartcar came to the states, it definitely made me nostalgic for Europe, but not enough to buy. The Mini Cooper got me actually seeing myself in the British classic. But I still didn't jump. But Fiat's 500? I think I'm ready to line up. Especially if my favourite Italian denim range Diesel brings their limited edition. Come se dice "style and class on the freeway"?!

I think something is really wrong with me. Yesterday, whilst listening to the BBC world service radio, I thought the economic report on energy and commodities was saying that Diesel and Energie jeans would be experiencing a price increase.

Then, last night I had a dream. Apparently Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg, John Varvatos, and Mason Martin Margiela were all on my mind. Because in my dream, walking through a department store and noticed a brand I had never seen. It was called Madi Vavela. And it was the love child dream project of the foursome to create a one-time line of the best of the best clothing. With the vivid colour of DvF, the playful energy of Marc, the vintage inspiration and character of Varvatos, and the absolute best fabrics and simplistic construction of MMM.

It took me at least a half hour to decide what I was going to wear today, because nothing was as good as Madi Vavela. So, in case Marc, Diane, John, or Martin are reading this - get on the ball, my friends! I need something to wear.

As I was driving to my neighbourhood shopping plaza today, I was listening to the BBC radio. As the economic world report was in progress, I realized my mind is forever fixed on fashion. Here's why. The presented said, "The cost of oil has risen. Therefore, the price of diesel and other energies will also rise." My first thought: "oh my god! Diesel and Energie have raised their prices and now denim will be more expensive!"

Fashion is consuming. Buyers beware.

Coco Chanel has no doubt been one of the most influential players in the luxury fashion arena. Mademoiselle Chanel was so poignant with her design and equally as powerful with her insights as well. Tis the season to be jolly...and fashionable. It's been a rough year for many. I have no idea what rock I've been living under. Or at least that's how I feel right now. I love L'Occitane en Provence. I think they have some pretty fabulous skincare and treats for the home. Well hello, my friends! After a few hundreds of entries here at Thirsty.Threads, I thought we all needed a little break. I remember when Galliano first came out with Dior's coveted Saddle Bags - there was so much excitement and furvor. But after the countless collections featuring the same bags, we were all over them. - 8-cup, double-walled French Press by Bodum (US$99). I love iced coffee. So give this little gem, and then make her the most amazing iced cafe. It's simple.

• Pour about a third of a pound of freshly ground coffee into the press.

• Fill the press with cold water and stir to wet the coffee grounds.

• Place the French-press lid over the coffee (don't press the plunger) and leave at room temperature for at least 12 hours. The longer you leave it, the stronger the brew.

• Press down the plunger, pour the concentrated coffee into a pitcher, and place in the refrigerator.

• Dilute each serving of coffee 1-to-1 with ice-cold water (use more water if the coffee's too strong), pour over ice, and serve with milk and sugar.

- recyclable produce bags from Branch Home (US$11 for a set of 5). Stop wasting plastic bags at the supermarket; keep your produce organized at the farmers market; use them to store your shoes whilst traveling.

- Skybar Wine Bottle Travelers (US$19,95). Keeps wine (or prosecco or champagne) chilled for hours, protected, and makes a brilliant accessory for the evening. Also makes great host or hostess gifts.

- J.Me Seville Orange Marmalade by Jamie Oliver (US$19.95). The English make the best marmalade, and this definitely packs a delicious punch. Delicious on toast, french toast, over chocolate cake or chocolate ice cream, and when heated on the stove with some powdered sugar, makes the most amazing glaze for brownies, cookies, doughnuts, and virtually anything.

There are few things I love more than fashion; cooking and cancer advocacy are definitely two of the select passions I'd include with fashion. So when Williams-Sonoma announced their sixth year of partnering with St. Jude's Children's Hospital (a national model for researching and treating children with cancer), I had to take note. A Designer Economy?

You'd think it was common sense, but I've officially understood that an economic depression is simply this: depressing. When everyday people are worried about their personal finances and the vitality of their future, the psyche becomes battered and bruised. Whilst those feelings are never en vogue, there are several positives from this negative economic reality.

Firstly, we must benefit from this teaching moment. Most people under the age of 50 have never really felt an economic pressure like we've experienced over the past few years. We didn't really have to worry about money, our financial stability, or whether or not we could pay our bills and provide for our families. But on some level, no matter how great or small, we've all felt the pinch in our pocketbooks.

I've said before that I really think the economy has done the retail industry a favour - it has eliminated the retailers who weren't at the top of their segment in customer service, shopping experience, selection of inventory, and customer friendly policies and procedures. Circuit City was never Best Buy. Additionally, those "museum shoppers" or people who would constantly come in to a store but never buy anything have stopped the playing the game of "just looking but not buying" and allowed associates to focus on their actual potential clientele.

With that being said, I'm really excited for those individuals who have and are still able to stimulate the economy and promote growth through shopping and commerce. The luxury industry has felt the pressure for sure, but the most successful and prominent brands have readjusted their approach to recapture, redefine, and refocus on their actual demographic and clientele. Designers have strengthened their visions and honed in on brand heritage and history. After all, fashion is the ultimate fantasy and escape from reality.

Luxury brands in particular are investing more than ever to cater to the needs of their clients. With unprecedented access through internet sites and ecommerce portals, companies like Burberry, Gucci, and Marc Jacobs are increasing their profits and intensifying brand identity constantly through virtual stores and the most mesmerizing multimedia campaigns.

Companies are also taking chances to further their positions and leverage their business. Marc Jacobs has intensified his identity and shaped his consumer's lifestyle choices with his bookmarc bookstores. When designers offer consumers an opportunity to live the life, everyone wins. When you sell the lifestyle, the emotion, and the romance, product suddenly flies off the shelf. For example, I could tell you that the Lady D collection from Christian Dior is a trendy handbag with a quilted pattern and looks great for all occasions. Or I could tell you that the Lady Dior collection was created in 1996 at the request of Madam Chirac for the eternally elegant Princess Diana to serve as a symbol of France, and that quilted pattern is called Cannage, a Louis XVI print that was found on the gold gilded chairs in Christian Dior's original main salon. Suddenly the bag is not just another bag, but a piece of art and history, a focus on fabulosity if you will.

Another great economic lesson - better quality goods are more expensive than their cheaper counterparts, but are often longer lasting. US$250 for a pair of Diesel jeans might seem expensive at first glance, but when you're still wearing those jeans 10 years later, the investment suddenly seems more reasonable when you consider paying just US$25 per year for amazing denim.

Economic distress also forces companies to re-evaluate their business models. When money is no object, customers are more inclined to spend more frivolously. Designers can sell anything and everything with their name or a logo. Marc Jacobs sold pet gear called Bark Jacobs. Dior sold baby bottles and other infant items. Versace sold a helicopter. But when the buyers dry up (or start being a little wiser with their money!), designers refocus on the more lasting categories.

Hopefully, we're saving more money than we might have before. Having immediate availability and access to cash and assets is incredibly important. A small nest egg in the bank is the new must-have accessory. Additionally, quality and value now play an even more important influence when making purchases - from basic necessities to the most exclusive of luxuries, customers demand the best quality their money can buy. -- Christopher Bailey is also rocking my world. A magical mix of military inspired versions of traditional English tailoring thrust forward into the 21st century - his anglomania is going to dominate the world. And your closet, if you're lucky.

-- I live for Olive. This fall, it's great to be green, and I don't just mean for the environment. Olive green, military green, army green, British racing green - I just can't get enough.

I tried a new product this weekend and might be in love. I've respected Bumble & Bumble for quite some time, and am really impressed with their new "Surf Hair" product.

Sexy, salty, sun-dried, windswept styles - whenever, wherever.

Who: Anyone; excellent for wavy types and surfers with winter blues; adds body to fine hair; a nice texture for silver hair.

When: Anytime; after Prep or Tonic Lotion, during styling.

How: Work through damp or dry hair; let dry naturally or blow-dry with a diffuser. Or on dry hair for detailing and adding lift at the roots. The less you touch it, the longer it will hold.

I don't care how they describe it; a few spritzes of this awesome product helped create easy texture, hold, and my hair looked great without being weighed down or feeling gunky.

For as long as I can remember, my Mother had skin cancer. Trips to the dermatologist, surgery, radiation, and other treatments became the norm. But she never let cancer stop her from living. She was a quiet fighter. She was born with Polio, but that didn't stop her from walking normally. In 2006, the cancer spread to her brain and lungs. I moved home to help care for her, stopped living for me, and started living for her. In April 2007, my Mom died. I've begun living for me again, and definitely live for her now. Status Update: My Sears online shopping experience

So on Tuesday, I filled you in with some tips I learned over the past three months dealing with an unfortunate experience with Sears. And wanted to give an update on my status as well as some additional tips:

Sears has yet to credit my debit card account yet. On Wednesday I learned that the supervisor who was issuing my credit didn't fill out the paperwork properly, so the credit had to be reissued. I was told the process would be complete within 1-2 business days, that a new supervisor and off-line department would see to this resolution as quickly as possible, and that everything would be taken care of.

I phoned Sears again this evening, because I had yet to see the credit - only to discover that the credit had yet to be issued, as it was caught up in the off-line department still. And to make matters worse, after multiple employees were told of my situation and worked on the solution - all knowing very plainly that I had cancelled the order and expected my full refund immediately - I STILL continued to receive an email from Sears today, updating me that my parts were "back ordered and would arrive on 26 June 2010" ... you can imagine how thrilling this was.

So yet another supervisor/associate/account manager/employee of Sears is "working" on the "solution" to refund my money. Long, drawn out, dramatic story short: it's been more than 90 days since I ordered my replacement parts. It's been more than 90 days since Sears received my payment. I have canceled my order. I continue to receive emails proclaiming a "26 June 2010" delivery for said back ordered items. And I still don't have my money.

When you place an online order and follow up or make any communication with the retailer - keep a detailed log of all communication. Document employee names AND identification numbers, the time and date of the communication, the issue, action, and result, and any specific instructions or notes they may tell you.

Ask for the representative to read back to you their notes, before you end the call, so that you're comfortable and aware of exactly what they have notated on your account.

And when in doubt, know that your credit card company and the Better Business Bureau are on your side.

Online Shopping Tips

I've recently had an online shopping experience I want to tell you about.

Back in May, I ordered 2 replacement tires for my lawnmower from Sears Parts Direct. I've been very happy with my lawnmower, and living in hot, sunny Florida, it gets more than it's share of work. I needed new tires, and since I bought the lawnmower from Sears, I wanted to get the parts as well.

Within the span of a month, I received more than a dozen emails from Sears, saying that the tires were on backorder, and would be shipped on a new date.

More than a month after I ordered the tires, they had yet to arrive, and I only received an email with yet another promised shipping date.

I went on vacation. I focused on projects for work. I visited family and friends. I forgot that I had even ordered the tires.

About two weeks ago, my father was tired of seeing a lawnmower strung apart in our garage. So he went to our local Sears Parts Store, where he walked in, told the cashier our dilemma, where in just a few short minutes, my Dad was able to buy the tires IN THE STORE without waiting. Tires that were supposedly backordered. For nearly three months. And to make matter worse, the associate checked the "national inventory" and found that 398 tires were available.

As you can imagine, I wasn't thrilled. I called Sears Parts Direct to ask about my tires. They said the tires were still on backorder. I told them I wasn't happy that for nearly 3 months, Sears had debited my checking account nearly US$60 for a product it had yet to ship, and hadn't contact me in nearly 2 months to give me an update. I requested a full refunded.

The next day, I had yet to receive the refund. So I asked to speak to a supervisor. The supervisor was at lunch. So I left my number with the agent, and was told I'd hear back when they returned from lunch. No one ever called. So now I'm feeling like, not only have I paid for a product three months ago that's yet to be delivered, now no one can even talk to me about the situation and a remedy.

So I call back the following day. When I explain the situation to the agent, the agent asks "why didn't you ask for a backorder charge-back"? I'm sorry - as a luxury retail consultant, with more than a decade of retail experience, I've never heard of a "backorder charge-back"...and in more than a dozen emails from Sears updating me on my situation, I was never given the option of a "backorder charge-back".

I'm still waiting for Sears to credt my account. And they've had my money for nearly 90 days now.

I'm not telling you this story out of vengeance or spite. I want you to know what I didn't.

If you order products online:

-- familiarize yourself with the policies of the individual vendor. In my case, Sears pushed the blame to the manufacturer and has a policy that "orders cannot be canceled".

-- monitor the process of your shipment. If you haven't received your product within a reasonable amount of time, follow up with the retailer. Track shipments and progress. If you need to dispute a charge, remember that your Credit Card is on your side. They can help you block payment or recover money in the event of undelivered merchandise.

-- if a product is on backorder, ask for a "backorder charge-back" - which apparently is a temporary refund until the product is actually in stock, and then is recharged by the company upon actually shipping the product.

Be smart. Be educated. Be ware.

I read a lot of fashion magazines, industry information, and preview countless photographs of runway collections and designers' latest goods. I really make an effort to stay in the marketplace, so I can see what real people want, try to understand their perspective and thought (or lack thereof) process, and especially to provide benchmarking and market demographic analysis. It's an ongoing effort - designers want to be creative and make fashion, shareholders expect widespread commercial success, and customers want cutting edge yet easy to incorporate and execute looks.

Fashion shows aren't meant to be duplicated on just any street in your town. They're meant to inspire a particular trend or emphasis, serve as a public relations blitz to build buzz and excitement for the designer and current collection, and to entertain. Think about it - if your hairdresser wore head-to-toe McQueen or Dior to cut and style your hair, you'd be so distracted and probably wouldn't trust him. Imagine a grocery store full of customers all clad in couture - you'd be so distracted that you'd forget why you were there in the first place.

Fashion to me is like a diet. Your doctor might recommend a new food to eat, or foods to avoid, or a special exercise plan. Your friends and family might also all try to chime in (whether asked or not) on how you should be living. And there's an unlimited stream of internet, radio, television, and print advertisements by an even bigger supply of companies trying to sway your dietary decisions as well. But only you know what's best for your diet. As for fashion - designers create months and even years in advance collections that might be totally wrong (or totally right!) without you particularly in mind. Stylists share their ideas. Magazines and television programing highlight what they think. And advertisements tell you what they think you can't live without. Everyone weighs in and wants a portion of your closet space, and more importantly, your wallet.

Sometimes I think the information en masse now available, thanks to the internet, satellite television, and mobile communications devices, has really done us a disservice. Does it really impact your life and livelihood to know that the price of raisins in Montana is $.30 less per pound than the price of raisins at your local grocery store? By the time you 1) figure out how to get to Montana, or even order some for shipment, you've spent much more than you could have saved.

Look at the varying food categories. Do you only buy "organic" or "natrual" or "low-sodium" or "low-calorie" or "low-fat" or "locally grown" or "hydroponic"? Do you buy from a wholesale warehouse, a locally owned grocer, a speciality shoppe, or a farmers market? No matter what your spending choices include, someone's going to weigh in. Some farms go out of their weight to be ECONOMICAL in growing their crops - so they may try to use environmentally friendly techniques - but sometimes they need reinforcement to control/protect their goods (I read in July's GQ magazine about a farm in New York that tries to use organic preventative measures, but sometimes only chemicals or manmade options are effective, just like honey and lemon can do only so much for a sore throat before your doctor needs to prescribe antibiotics to get the job done properly!). So technically the farm isn't considered "natural" or "organic" - even though they've gone out of their way to be fiscally and environmentally responsible.

The same can be applied to fashion. As much as the folks at Peta want to stop the incorporation of fur and leather, it will never succeed. Think about it - back in the day, before the widespread availability of nylon, polyblended everything, and synthetic fabrics - everything was "all natural and organic" - from the leather, cotton, silk, and fur. That's pretty much all the materials available. And they were earth sourced. I'm not saying we need to walk around like cavewomen with fur pelts and leather loincloths.

What I am saying is that WE NEED TO LIGHTEN UP! Eat what you want, when you want. Wear what want, because you love it - not because a poorly dressed stylist who is getting paid to tell you what they think is trending for the season says so. When you start living for you, making educated, thoughtful decisions, you'll really look good. Because we all know - when you look good, you feel better. And when you feel better, you look best.

So I just was looking online at old articles published by Esquire Magazine. One of them was about a "bucket list" and featured 75 things to do before you die. Some of them I've already done. Some of them I have no interest in doing. But number nineteen is calling my name.

Lean into the services a good hotel offers as if it were a way of life and it will be. On the first day, order the same breakfast to be delivered to your room at the same time, every day thence. Tell them you like the newspaper on the cart, with no plastic bag. Take long showers. Stop in at the front desk for messages. Greet the doormen with a twenty. Take walks. Take saunas. Learn the name of the room-service manager. Establish a routine involving a cocktail, the balcony, and a bowl of olives. Tell the concierge to make you seven dinner reservations for seven nights. Tell him to surprise you. After you leave, go back a year later and they will remember your name. At a hotel, it is good to be known.

I know we've been experiencing a less-than-stellar economic reality the past few years. Markets are unstable, currencies are unpredictable, and what used to be sound investment ideas are no longer secure. But there are definitely some key indicators of better times ahead:

-- Chicago's Rush Street is doing more than it's part. With a bold and beautiful new location, Barneys New York is taking Chicago by storm. The six level department store features many of the world's best brands and must-haves. And Hermes has just relocated their fabulous flagship boutique to the intersection of Rush and Oak Streets, bringing one of the most exclusive, sought after French brands to the Windy City in all of it's grandeur and glory. There's even an extremely limited edition silk scarf called "Paddock" available solely in this location (for a mere US$375). Chicago also boasts boutiques by Marc Jacobs, Burberry, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Ferragamo, Jimmy Choo, Tiffany & Co., Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani, Chanel, and La Perla to name a few.

-- Luxury powerhouse Moet Hennessey Louis Vuitton is hiring again. The luxe conglomerate has posted a handful of opportunities on their corporate site for positions in media relations, project management, training, and public relations. Is the brand looking to further expand its reach in North America? Regardless, investing in internal improvement and productivity is definitely a positive sign of growth and success.

-- The Waldorf=Astoria, one of the world's most luxurious hotel brands, is expanded to new locations. Joining the historic New York location, Waldorf=Astoria Orlando brings the world class service you expect with the perfect Floridian atmosphere. Also set to open within the next several months are Waldorf=Astoria Shanghai, Waldorf=Astoria Berlin, and Waldorf=Astoria Jerusalem. Long term buzz also includes locations in Beverly Hills and Philadelphia, among others.

-- Cosmetics and Fragrance mecca Sephora has struck a deal with the storied American department store JC Penney. While the chain isn't typically considered a luxury player, the new partnership with Sephora will bring luxe brands to the retailer from favourites like Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Bliss, and Armani. The move definitely signals an increased desire for luxury brands across all demographics, especially in the health and beauty segment.

-- Tiffany & Co., one of the most recognized and sought after jewelers around the world, is set to expand their product ranges with a collection of high end leather goods. The iconic retailers will begin selling handbags, wallets, coin purses, and other small leather goods by the famous duo Richard Lambertson and John Truex. “Richard Lambertson and John Truex are the latest in our tradition of inviting the world’s best designers to work exclusively with Tiffany,” says Jon King, executive vice president of Tiffany & Co. “Their vision and mastery of the craft combined with the skill of the finest Italian artisans have produced a leather collection of timeless simplicity, with all the quality and luxury of the Tiffany experience.” Highlighting the collection is a glazed crocodile Manhattan satchel for US$17,500. Other bags and brief cases will be available in various animal prints, full grain calf skin, lambskin, and python. The collection is set to launch September 2010 in 12 exclusive locations and online.

-- Electronics giant Apple sold more than 1,7 million 4th generation iPhones - setting a company record product release. Additionally, the big mobilephone companies in the US are investing millions of dollars to upgrade their networks to 4G. Currently American customers only receive cellular data transmissions at 3G speeds.

We're not in the clear yet. Unemployment rates are still at record highs, people are still starving, and homes are still being lost. But there is definitely light at the end of this long, dark tunnel. The more you shop, the more you eat out, and the more you spend in your local community, the more jobs you support and the more growth you provide - which are always en vogue.

More Than Your Best Friend

I don't believe in reincarnation. I hope when I die, I go to heaven and that will be the end of it. But I do think sometimes that I've had several past lives. I know that sounds a little odd. But it's true. There are some things I love, some things I'm infatuated with, and some skills I am able to perform that I people of this age normally don't acquire. For example, how many heterosexual men know how to sew? Or bake a pie? Or know the most random details about how Christian Dior made his first couture dresses? Or cared about the brilliance of diamonds? Maybe I'm just in training to be the perfect husband.

Over the past several months, I've become friends with the fabulous ladies (and gentleman) at Be On Park, a luxury jewelry boutique in Winter Park, Florida. Incredibly personable, warm, and friendly, these lovely ladies are as smart as they are beautiful. They know the story. They love the romance. And they know their jewels.

I don't pretend to know much about jewelry. I like what I like. I know you're supposed to pay attention the colour, the cut, the clarity, and the carat weight, but I doubt I'd know the difference between a high quality and a not-so-nice version.

There are several pieces in the store that I really love. One, in particular, is a necklace from A. Link. And you know me - I had to know more about the company, the story, the romance...

A World of Fake

They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery - but I really must say that imitation is hazardous... to your health; to your economy; and to my livelihood.

I'm watching a programme on CNBC called "Crime Inc: Counterfeit Goods." It is an examincation of the counterfeit-goods industry, and includes a profile on the Los Angeles Police Department's anti-counterfeiting unit; inspections at ports for counterfeit goods; backroom factories where counterfeits are produced; and a couple who was paralyzed by faux Botox.

I never really used to care much about the act of counterfeiting goods until I worked at Christian Dior. When I'd see people with fake handbags and luxury items, whether from Dior or any other brand, I'd get so upset. Why? Because I know that those skilled artisans who have mastered their craft and create the real versions were missing out on money that should be rightfully theirs. Let alone the shipping companies who lose out on transporting legitimate goods, the countless people employed by those luxury houses who manage, promote, market, analyze, track, and sell those oh-so-fabulous goods.

Counterfeit goods extends so much farther than luxury knockoffs. From fake Disney toys, to computer parts, to appliances, to extension cords, to laundry detergent, if there are products in demand, you can assume there are counterfeit versions available. And these goods are potentially hazardous to your health. Think about it - those who produce counterfeit goods only have one thing on their mind. Not your safety. Not brand integrity. Not quality materials. PROFIT! The counterfeit industry is in existence solely for one purpose - to make money.

In 2005, nearly US$ 500 million dollars in tax revenue was lost due to the counterfeit goods industry. Whenever you buy fake goods, not only are you putting your own health at risk, but you also directly support economies other than your own. Your neighbours suffer. Your local government has less resources.

Among the most lethal counterfeits are medicine. From fake cough syrup to cancer treatments, the counterfeit medicine industry is nearly US$75 million this year alone. These ingredients are also very toxic, rarely tested, and incredibly harmful. Drugs appear shiny and clean, because counterfeiters hope you can't tell a difference.

Caveat Emptor: Buyer Beware. I can't help but think of the song "The Boy is Mine" from singers Brandy and Monica - "From the truth you can't escape, I can tell the real from the fake!"

It's no secret that I love Crate & Barrel. And in typical fashion regarding everything that I love, I wanted to know more. You see, in the luxury retail industry, everything has a story. From the inspiration for design, the time-tested treatments for fabrics and materials for that oh-so-perfect aesthetic, the history and heritage of a company's origins - everything has a story. Part of the allure to luxe companies and products is that romance.

It's a general understanding that people want to feel good. We want to experience success and happiness, good health, and harmony. Jennifer Saunders is Ab Fab

One of my favourite shows of all time is Absolutely Fabulous, a brilliant British comedy about two fabulous friends Patsy and Edina and their luxurious and over-the-top lifestyle. It's one of those shows that you enjoy watching most by yourself, because you don't want people to judge you for laughing hysterically at inappropriate jokes, behaviour, and portrayals.

I'm saddened to report that Jennifer Saunders, who plays public relations mogul Edina Monsoon, is fighting breast cancer. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ms. Saunders during this tremendous fight.

Cancer is never en vogue and it's certainly fabulous, either!

I don't know if it's amazingly awesome or truly terrible. I love soccer. And I guess maybe you could say possibly that I might have watched a few games.

Let me be honest. I've watched every game. Every. Single. Match of the 2010 World Cup games.
I love watching European soccer, particularly. I remember in college when my roommates and fraternity brothers would make fun of me for watching hours of Serie A games or old Bundesliga matches, and especially the Premier League. So now that soccer is significantly more mainstream in the United States (albeit realistically a temporary interest), I'm definitely enjoying the ability to watch soccer on television, with live commentary.

I don't know where all of these sudden soccer fans have been hiding, but I've seen more soccer gear, more soccer parties, and more people up in the mornings en masse cheering for their "favourites" at bars and pubs across the country. For the USA/England match, you might mistake Finnhenry's in downtown Orlando for a neighbourhood pub in Islington. For the Portugal/Brazil match, you might mistake San Diego's Gas Lamp district for the bars nearest Stadio Olimpico and Foro Italica in the north of Roma.

And let me tell you, it is no easy feat watching World Cup live when you're on the West Coast. Whilst in California, the first matches of the day began at 4:30 in the morning! That is dedication.

And now, as if I wasn't excited enough for World Cup and soccer in general, those of us in the United States will now have the opportunity to continue on this exciting soccer fever, thanks to ESPN3. Beginning in August, more than 800 live soccer matches from the best European leagues will be available, streaming live. German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A, Spanish La Liga, Portuguese Liga, and Dutch Eredivisie.

And whichever executives agreed to this new offering, I say danke, grazie, gracias, obrigado, and dank u.

A Grand Designer from Granville

It's no secret that I love Christian Dior Couture. Whilst in college, I started my formal luxury career at a Dior Boutique in the United States.

And I'm currently loving Dior's Granville collection. Named after the city where Christian's childhood home is located, the Granville handbag features the iconic, hand-stitched Cannage pattern - a Louis XVI print that was the same pattern featured on the gold gilded chairs inside the main salon of the House of Dior (at 30, Avenue Montaigne in Paris - which also was the inspiration of it's own collection, Le Trente).
The Granville handbag is of classic shape and design with silver-tone metal D.I.O.R charms, a main zipped pocket, 2 large pockets, and is carried in the hand or over the sholder (with included strap). Measures 32,5 cm by 30 cm by 15,5 cm. Available in lambskin and patent leather or by special order in python or ostrich.

More than a Noble Experiment

Have you ever discovered an amazingly intimate, totally awesome, incredibly entertaining, out-of-this-world local place, that was so special to you that you didn't want to tell anyone about it - in fear of causing an overwhelming number of people to become just as in love with the place as you are, preventing you from easily gaining reservations and totally ruining the experience?

I was just in San Diego, California to visit family and friends. Before I left, one of my very best friends took me out for drinks. All I knew was that we were going to a "pretty cool place" and that you had to have reservations. We walked from his fabulous downtown apartment a few blocks to what looked like a normal urban eatery/bar called Neighborhood. The place was packed with trendy yet casual diners, happily eating gourmet burgers and enjoying several different microbrews. We moved in towards the side of the restaurant near the bar, where I thought we were waiting to had a drink. Before I was ready to order, I wanted to use the toilet - so my friend pointed me to the bathrooms - which were literally in the walkway of the kitchen.

When I returned from the facility (which was much larger than I was expecting) - my friend took me over to this wall of beer kegs and asked which type of beer I liked. I was confused. When have you been to a bar or restaurant and asked what type of KEG do you like? Were we really going to order and pay for an ENTIRE keg of beer?

Without warning, my buddy lunges his entire body onto the wall of kegs...and the kegs MOVED! They were not kegs, but indeed a FAKE DOOR! "oh my gosh - what the @(*$ just happened?!" I thought.

We proceed into the interior of the hidden space, where we were pleasantly greeted by a beautiful girl with a fabulous smile. She expected we had reservations, punched a few keys on her computer, and walked us around the corridor, where we entered the most amazing bar.

During the prohibition era in the United States, it was illegal to possess and drink alcohol, so there began as series of "hidden" or "underground" bars that were private establishments and often became institutions of enlightened discussion, relaxation, business, and the most delicious drinks. Think about it - if it was illegal to possess and drink alcohol - on those rare opportunities that you were able to enjoy a beverage of this calibre, you'd expect it to be hand crafted, of the best available ingredients, be potent, and refreshing.

The Noble Experiement (the name of the bar) accomplishes all of this and more. The entire main wall (to your left, when you arrive) is literally covered in skulls. There are maybe 3 small banquets/booths with tables for a few, and maybe a dozen or so (very comfortable) stools along the bar. Of course, I wanted to sit at the bar. I love watching skilled bartenders at work.

We are quickly introduced to Anthony -one of two tenders employed by the bar. He's there every day that the bar is open (they're closed on Mondays and Tuesdays I believe). And to say Anthony is the most passionate, skilled, and friendly bartender would be an understatement. After describing which types of drinks and flavours we enjoy most, without question or hesitation - Anthony led each of us on very separate, but spot on, journeys of absolute (albeit alcoholic) heaven.
Everything is done by hand. From crushing the ice, to squeezing the juice or extracting the zest, to shaking, to swirling, to muddling, to concocting, to testing for quality and desirability - Anthony is the man. I've never met someone so passionate about drinking - the finest ingredients, the perfect presentation, the best recommendations - Anthony is as educated as he is skilled.

In short - here's my review. The most amazing experience - from the venue, to the ambiance, to the menu, to the staff, to the value, to the quality, to the memories made - I can't get enough, I can't say enough, and I can't return fast enough.

post post script - I really didn't want to write about The Noble Experiment because it is such a rare gem, I'm afraid too many people flooding the establishment would 1) ruin the experience and 2) make it increasingly difficult to attain reservations. Cristiano Ronaldo must be wearing David Beckham's shoes. First the Portuguese soccer star ended his successful run at Manchester United (like Beckham) and signed an incredibly lucrative contract with Real Madrid (like Beckham).

The other day I posted an entry regarding Dolce & Gabbana's new Calcio Underwear collection and the fact that it's modeled by some of the best Italian National team players. One of my friends commented how the campaign would be even better if it contained Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo.

My response: Giorgio Armani already had that thought. Starting with Spring/Summer 2010 collections, Maestro Armani featured Cristiano in his Emporio Armani underwear campaign and in his Armani Jeans advertisements (like Beckham).

Apparently the campaign was successful, as the Portuguese footballer will be featured in the Autumn/Winter 2010-2011 underwear promotions. Ronaldo obviously beefed up for the shoot, which took place in Madrid. Famous photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot were the creative talent behind the lens.

Look for the campaign on high profile billboards in select majour cities (New York, London, Tokyo, etc) beginning July.

No matter which Beckham move Ronaldo takes next, I'm sure it'll be done with style and class.

Rihanna needs to take a page from Gwen Stefani's book and start her own fashion line. She's got such fabulous fashion sense and style savvy that could definitely translate to something stellar.
