green is the new black, and it's sexy as...

Fragrances in fashion are an interesting category.  Some smell fabulous; others, not so much.  Some invoke positive memories and emotions; others, not so much.  Some are made with rare ingredients and are created with time-honored traditions; others, not so much.  When it comes to fine fragrances, there is only one master.  And his name is Tom Ford.

From years at Gucci and Yves St. Laurent, to his own brand for more than a decade, Mr. Ford gives 100% of his attention to every single detail.  His demand for excellence and superior design are unrivaled.  If his name is on the product, you are guaranteed to fall in love.  From fragrance to footwear and everything in between, the quality and integrity of each product go above and beyond expectations.

This same commitment to exceeding expectations is found especially in the service you'll receive with Tom Ford employees.  I've never seen a brand with so many dedicated, loyal, and knowledgeable staff.  It's as if each associate is also an ambassador for Mr. Ford himself.  Case in point: Kerin, Clarence, and Tonya at the Tom Ford Beauty boutique inside Nashville's Nordstrom.  The love these beautiful people have for their brand, let alone their industry, is infectious.  Before new product even arrives in store, I get phone calls and messages filled with excitement and anticipation, as if an old friend was calling to tell me the best news of their life.  It's absolutely awesome to build a relationship with such fabulous people, especially when they share my love of looking good and feeling better.

A few weeks ago, I was introduced to the new Vert private blended fragrances.  Even the descriptions of the fragrances go above and beyond, detailing the overall notes of the scents, plus specific emotional feelings and images.  You don't just smell a fragrance; you're transported to an imaginary world of fabulosity and grandeur.

Bright.  Ethereal.  Divine.  Sparking and infallible like a jewel gleaming in the sun, private blend Vert Boheme is Tom Ford's interpretation of green at its most free-spirited.  Sicilian Mandarin and Magnolia exude bohemian femininity, exquisitely enhanced with Gustavia, also known as the tree of heaven, known for its spectacular single blooms that last for just one day.  The fresh vibrancy awakens a divine first bloom, crystal-clear and exposed.

Expressive.  Indelible.  Deep.  Private Blend Vert Des Bois introduces provocative woods at their most expressive.  An inventive ingredient in modern perfumery, poplar bud extract infuses avant-garde edge to traditional green.  The extract from the unopened buds is further driven by spiked ouzo, evoking the deepest thicket of snow-laden forest.

Aromatic. Distinguished.  Wild.  The unbridled nature of the Corsican coast, known as the "Perfumed Isle," inspires a distinguished scent at once sophisticated, aromatic and wild.  Smoky incense, pine resin, and fir balsam evoke the dense forest and rugged peaks, while delectable heliotrope and woods heighten the grand atmosphere of sea and shadow.

I always joke that cosmetics brands can't hire ugly people, since the product they're selling is supposed to be beautiful.   Kerin, Clarence, and Tonya aren't just physically beautiful, with flawless skin and gorgeous makeup - they exude beauty.  Always gracious, happy to demonstrate products, and providing fabulous service, they are my one-stop-shop for all things beautiful.  To place an order or book a consultation, phone +1.615.850.6700.

With these new Tom Ford private blend fragrances, Green is the new Black, and it's sexy as...

fabulous french fragrance

"I’ve always loved the duality of rhubarb. A double duality: visual and olfactory. The green color metamorphoses into red. Starting acidic and crisp, its smell becomes smooth and velvety."
—Christine Nagel, Parfumeur
 http://www.hermes.com/index_us.html
Perfume has been a part of Hermès history since the 1930s. In the library of Hermès perfumes, each perfume is a story and opens up an imaginary world. Acting as both craftsman and artist, Hermès invests its unparalleled savoir-faire and creative freedom in all its perfumed creations.

With Eau De Rhubarbe Ecarlate, Christine Nagel has created her first Cologne for Hermès .  Unprecedented and bold, more vegetal than citrus, it gives us the crisp, acidic freshness of rhubarb made velvety smooth with white musks.

I've always loved fabulous fragrances, especially the more unique varieties.  My longtime favorites have been from the private blend collection by Tom Ford.  They're simply beyond.  But this time, something is different.  In a good way!  Maybe it's because my childhood was fueled by my Mother's special rhubarb cake and rhubarb pies.  Or because I've always loved the elegance and heritage associated with Hermès.  Regardless, I couldn't have been more excited getting a sneak "sniff" of this incredible indulgence at Nordstrom today.

Great gift suggestion for Father's Day, graduation, or simply just because...

a few faves

All of my favorite things in life start with the same letter: faith, family, fashion, food, friends, fun.  Everything revolves around these categories, and are always a priority in life.  They fuel me, bring encouragement and entertainment, keep me grounded and guided, and supported and safe.

A few things I'm loving lately:

luxury leads the way

One of my favorite aspects of the luxury industry is the innovation.  From new fabrics and construction, to the must-have colors and crazes, creativity is celebrating nowhere more than in the luxury industry.  As a client, part of the allure is exclusivity and nowness, a combination of being both new and cutting edge.  It's the perfect combination of being edgy and edited, excited without being too eccentric.  As a businessman, the hardest part of the industry is being exclusive without being too exclusionary or out of reach.

One of the easiest ways for luxury houses to reach all demographics is through accessories and beauty products. Your budget might not allow for Christian Louboutin's latest heels, but you may indulge yourself with their latest nail polish.  You might not spring for a $30,000 Hermes bag, but a bottle of perfume or cologne might be much more accessible.  From sandals to sunglasses, it's often these entry level categories that often fund the fashion houses, followed by more substantial footwear, ready-to-wear, fine jewelry, and ultimately couture.  The more labor intensive, the more exotic the materials, the more expensive the final cost.

Styles and trends often trickle down from the luxury segment to the mass produced segment.  One trend I've noticed lately is the widespread use of oud.  Dating back to biblical times, the wise men were truly wise, bringing frankincense and myrrh as a gift.  The trend of gifting fragrance continues today.  The most exclusive, expensive ingredient for fragrance is Oud, the heartwood of the Aquilaria trees in southeast Asia.  Oud is particularly prized in the Middle East, known for scenting homes, wardrobes, and clothing.  The ingredient itself is known for being particularly long lasting, very delicate, and very specific in aroma.  Because of this, and the limited quantity produced, the price of raw oud is many times the price of gold. Additionally, the price is only climbing, as the availability of the wild resources of oud are simply disappearing and depleting.  Since 1995, the primary source for oud, Aquilaria malaccenis, has been designated by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora has potentially threatened, although many countries are excluded from the listing.  Just like fine wines and balsamic vinegar, the value and age go hand and hand.  It's warm, earthy, gentle, sometimes smoky, and almost like smelling fresh wind in the desert on a warm summer's night.

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/tom-ford-oud-wood-eau-de-parfum/3623561?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort

My favorite fragrances with oud hands down are Tom Ford's private blends.  Mr. Ford describes it himself as rare, exotic, and distinctive.  Just like the fragrances often burned in the temples of Buhtan, this fabulous fragrance contains exotic rose wood and caradmom that give way tot he smoky blend of rare oud wood, sandalwood, and vetiver, and are finished with tonka bean and amber for even more warmth and sensuality.  You'll find other versions featuring Oud + Tobacco and Oud + Fleur as well, along with soaps, beard conditioning oils, shower gels, and moisturizers.  For more details, phone Yvonne at Tom Ford's Chicago Boutique on +1.312-605-5041 or Tonya at Nashville's Tom Ford Beauty inside Nordstrom at +1.615.850.6700.

Oud isn't just a trend for luxury fragrances.  On a recent trip to Target, I even noticed an "oud" like deodorant from very accessible Axe. The brand describes it as "A subtle, woody scent with juicy mandarin, fresh black pepper and sensual vanilla. A premium quality, long-lasting fragrance."  While I seriously doubt the inclusion of actual Oud in the formula, it's very interesting to see such a distinct fragrance in a mass produced environment.

What other trends and concepts are you loving that transcend demographics and price points?

face forward

The weather has definitely been wacky in North America lately.  Mother Earth must be confused, blasting the summer heat in Florida, torrential rain and historic flooding in the midwest, and buckets of snow in the plains.  Regardless of where you're living or traveling, follow these steps for perfect pores and supple skin.

Step One: Exfoliate.

When you're deep cleaning your home, you always sweep before you mop the floor.  Same goes for your skin.  Exfoliating is key for fresh faces, allows for maximum efficacy of your skincare products, and makes for a healthy, radiant look.  There are a few different types of exfoliants: physical, chemical, and professional.  Physical exfoliants literally scrub away the dead skin cells and other damaging debris.  There are a number of exfoliating tools on the market, like sonic brushes.  You can also use products with texture, like ground seeds and crushed shells.  Chemical exfoliants can be naturally sourced or made in a laboratory, and unlock the glue that holds dead skin cells to the face, help soften the skin, and promote healthy skin in general.  And finally, professional exfoliating is done in a dermatologist's office or Medical Spa, and usually consists of high potency products and treatments, like laser resurfacing.

In the winter time, I recommend exfoliating once or twice a week.  Any more than that and you'll run the risk of leaving your skin raw and chapped.  Concentrate especially on the face and hands, as these are the areas most often exposed to harsh winter weather. It's also important to exfoliate the rest of your body. With so many layers of clothes, your body will be more prone to sweating, chafing, and less breathing than normal.  Exfoliating will give your skin a chance to breathe a sigh of relief, removing those pesky pimple-causing oils and pore cloggers, revealing fresh, youthful skin.

Step Two: Cleanse.

Cleansing the skin is very important, and isn't a "one size fits all" type of product.  You may be dry, combination, or oily.  You may have special skin concerns, like acne, redness or other discoloration, sensitivities, or advanced aging.  I recommend using a face wash geared towards your skin concerns, with as many natural ingredients as possible.  I wash my face in the shower every morning, allowing the steam to also open my pores and help for even deeper cleaning.  (And guys, shaving after you shower allows for a closer, smoother shave!)

Step Three: Protect.

Now that you've cleaned the skin, it's important to protect the skin from the elements, nourish it, and address any skin concerns.  This is when you may apply specialty serums, balancing tonics, specialty serums, moisturizers, and most importantly, sun protection. There are endless options for all of these, so choose products that address your concerns and desires, that fit both your budget and your lifestyle.

Even in the winter time, you must use sunscreen.  Many indoor lights give off UVA (ultra violet aging) or UVB (ultra violet burning) rays, causing damage and even cancer, so don't forget a final layer of sunscreen on the face, hands, arms, and neck.

If you're planning on hitting the slopes, don't forget to moisturize and protect any skin that may be exposed to the elements - especially your lips.  Keep eyes protected as well with ski goggles, or at least polarized sunglasses.  And while driving a car or snow machine, remember to apply a layer of sunscreen to your hands, or wear sun screening gloves.

You don't have to break the bank to find good skincare.  Like food in the grocery store, read the ingredients, ask questions, and do your homework.  Here are a few skincare products from every pricepoint:

Yes to Carrots

Say Yes To Tomatoes, for regular use with oily skin, or infrequent use with combination skin.  Let this natural, detoxifying cleanser pick you right up and get you on track to beautiful, clear skin.  It is formulated with active charcoal to draw out impurities and other pore clogging offenders, tomato extract for a daily dose of antioxidants and revitalizing vitamins, jojoba spheres for oh-so-gentle exfoliation, and salicylic acid to deep clean pores and prevent future breakouts. Together, these purifying ingredients clear you up without drying you out.
  • 97% Natural
  • Paraben, SLS, and Silicone Free
  • Cruelty-free
  • US$ 9,99
Origins Scrub

Scrub away the "ick" to have the most youthful, soft, radiant skin.  Sugar softens; salt purifies.  I love Origins' Salt Scrub.  Skin-scouring Dead Sea Salts and warming Ginger Zest cushioned in emollient-rich Macadamia, Soybean, Kukui Nut and Sweet Almond Oils removes all traces of roughness to buff every bit of you. Use it once a week in the shower from the neck down, and more often on the hands, elbows, knees, and feet as needed.  US$38.

Boots Cream
For dry and very dry skin, I recommend a super hydrating moisturizer. Boots Derma Care Daily Moisturising Cream is a rich moisturising cream for the management of very dry skin. The cream is quickly and easily absorbed and starts to soothe the skin immediately. The skin feels smooth, hydrated and is less dry in just three days.

goodbye wine, hello minerals and peace

A new year has come!  Rejoice!  As we pack up our Christmas/Hanukkah Decor and prepare for a new year of opportunities, excitement, and adventures, we also look forward to what may be.  And one of the biggest things that may be is a new color!  Pantone, the international authority on all things color, has a color of the year.  One would think that a color authority wouldn't have much impact on the retail marketplace and consumer trends, but it's the exact opposite. For the last many moons, Pantone sets the trend on all things pigmented, influencing everything from lipstick and nail polish shades to the color of our sheets, shoes, and sunglasses.  Last year's Marsala instantly was a hit.  And just because it's a new year, doesn't mean we have to throw away our beloved red/brown hued Persol sunglasses and butter LONDON nail polishes.  The new year, the new color, means one more shade to throw in our rotation of fabulousness.

And for the first time ever, the 2016 Pantone Color of the Year is actually two colors!  And symbolically, the color choice couldn't be more indicative of our society.  The lines are blurred.

PANTONE 13-1520 & PANTONE 15-3919

A softer take on color for 2016: For the first time, the blending of two shades – Rose Quartz and Serenity are chosen as the PANTONE Color of the Year.

As consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses, welcoming colors that psychologically fulfill our yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent. Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.

The prevalent combination of Rose Quartz and Serenity also challenges traditional perceptions of color association.

In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design. This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer's increased comfort with using color as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.

A symbolic color selection; a color snapshot of what we see taking place in our culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude.

For the first time Pantone introduces two shades, Rose Quartz and Serenity as the Pantone Color of the Year 2016. Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.

Sheila Bridges' Harlem Toile

Sheila Bridges' Harlem Toile wallpapers.   When a color is too monochromatic, you lose the effect of the color's richness and power.  I like to mix things up and focus on a neutral color as the primary focus, and pepper in the complimenting colors through accessories and accents.  Sheila Bridges' Harlem Toile wallpaper in this delightful Dove is the perfect base for the Pantone 2016 Colors of the Year.  Gray has always been my favorite color, and was Christian Dior's favorite as well.

luxe loves and lavish lusts

There's nothing more wonderful than giving the perfect gift to the perfect recipient.  Gifts out of obligation aren't gifts; giving gifts out of obligation is impersonal, often lacking meaning, applicable function, or inspiration.  I love giving gifts that you know the recipient will use, but on a much grander scale, with an extra dash of style + class.  Here are a few things I'm loving, for a variety of recipients on your shopping list:

-- Burberry's Prorsum collection is beyond fashion forward.  Imagine having next decade's must-have designs, right now.  The best fabrics and materials.  The most delicate, yet durable construction by hand.  I recently had the privilege of seeing an incredible python and shell embellished trench coat.  One of fifteen made, it can be the perfect gift for the fashionista in your life.  US$15,000.

https://us.burberry.com/

-- Peter Nappi brings an old world elegance to footwear, small leather goods, and a handful of very edited gifts and accessories.  Fatto a mano a Firenze, Italian for handmade in Florence, each piece is simply beyond.  The colors rich; the leather luxurious; the construction durable.  I literally spend hours in their Nashville studio, taking a journey not around an industrial building in Nashville's trendy Germantown, but a stroll down historic streets of Florence and Toscana.  I've been in love with the simple, elegant Nina clutch since I first saw it.  Perfect for the globetrotting gals in your life, this envelope style clutch has neutral suede lining, antique silver hardware, contrast black leather strap closure.  US$250.  Phone JJ and Joe at +1.615-248-3310 for more details or to place an order.  Global shipping available.

-- Nordstrom has found the perfect mix of stocking something for everyone, with quality, style, and value at all price points.  I'm loving their Moncler Bellette lacquer down coat with fox fur ruff.  From the private jet to the supermarket, this gorgeous geometric chevron quilting streamlines the fit of this three-quarter puffer coat.  Avoid the typical marshmallow look and have an actual silhouette, thanks to the secure zip pockets and center-back seaming that help define a waist. Lavish fur trim and a liquid-shine finish make a sporty and luxe statement for everyday elegance, while soft down fill offers plush warmth throughout the cold-weather season.  Fashion + Function with Style + Class.  US$2210.

While you're at Nordstrom, be sure to stop by the Tom Ford Beauty counter.  I've been obsessed with skincare for more than 15 years now, and I must say I am so impressed by the products on offer by Tom Ford.  On my last trip to the gorgeous Green Hills' location, Tonya showed me two products I'm in love with - for both face and hands.  I'm always surprised how people neglect the skin on their hands.  There's nothing worse than seeing an older man or woman, who clearly has had some nips + tucks, but the wrinkliest, oldest looking hands.  To combat this, I recommend to moisturize and protect your hands daily for both men and women of all ages.  Tom Ford's Intensive Infusion Concentrate Extreme serum and Intensive Infusion ultra-rich moisturizer are perfect for this. Born from Tom Ford's personal passion for high-performance skin treatments that bring real results, this miracle working serum contains the most concentrated form of the patented Tom Ford Infusing Complex.  This complex packs a one-two punch of vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals to the deepest levels of the skin, reviving skin's health and radiance and creating a flawless, fabulous finish.  Just a tiny drop of this Concentrated Serum over the face, neck, and hands make for radiance, youthfulness, and vitality that won't fade away.

And this moisturizer is packed full of intensely nourishing and moisturizing ingredients, like antioxidant rich Shea Butter, restoring skin's brilliance and vitality, and a super special infusing complex that helps skin stimulate its natural repairing mechanisms by prompting cells to replenish their natural energy, along with an army of vitamins and nutrients to shower the skin with the perfect amount of moisture, with a smooth, vibrant appearance.

Together, skin looks and feels brighter, tighter, fresher, and more vivacious.  Phone Tonya on +1.615.850.6700 to place an order or book an appointment for a demonstration in store.

-- my top three favorite design houses of all time are Christian Dior, Hermes, and Goyard.  Incredibly luxurious, the everyday elegance these brands offer is manifest through historical codes, time-tested and treasured methods for construction, with the finest materials and design elements.  One of the most glamourous ways to add some style + class to your winter wardrobe is with bright, fun gloves.  I absolutely adore these fire orange Grand Prix gloves from Hermes, which feature cognac contrast suede piping and bright palladium plated metal hardware.  US$750.

-- one of my favorite gifts to give includes really great linens.  From simple tea towels for everyday use in the kitchen, to more extravagant linens for the bed, you can never go wrong with this category for gifts and special occasions.  Belgian based Libeco not only respect the time honored and tested methods of traditional linen products, they are fiercely committed to protecting the environment, while creating the most exquisite linens

What is your favorite indulgence?  In a dream world, what would Father Christmas deliver under your tree?  What would you unwrap on the sixth day of Hanukkah?  What would your sweetheart surprise you with?
